The mandate of the Nyeri Chai Farmers Association (NCFA) is to lobby and advocate for the rights of tea farmers, ensuring that they are aware of and understand their rights. NCFA also aims to empower farmers to confidently speak out when these rights are violated without fear of reprisals.
To be the recognized voice of the tea farmer in Nyeri County.
To empower tea farmers in Nyeri County to know their rights and to speak out boldly.
This mission is currently focused on Nyeri County as part of the strategic plan for 2024-2028. During this period, NCFA will prioritize building both farmer capacity and internal institutional strength. Once established, the Association will explore expansion to other counties, bolstered by strong partnerships and a solid foundation.
NCFA was officially registered in September 2015 under the Societies Act. Its formation was the result of a series of meetings and consultations held by tea farmers from five tea factories in Nyeri County: Gathuthi, Ragati, Iriaini, Gitugi, and Chinga.
Farmers came together because they felt their concerns and opinions were not being heard or addressed by the existing representation mechanisms
In response, a small group of about thirty farmers initially formed the core of NCFA. Over time, many members dropped out due to the financial and logistical challenges, but a passionate group of about fifteen remained committed. This group shouldered the expenses of consultations, legal fees, and other associated costs out of their own pockets. Their boldness, vision, and dedication have sustained the Association to date.
