Achievements of NCFA

Significant Reforms in the Tea Sub-Sector

NCFA has made remarkable achievements to date. Among the reforms in the tea sub-sector in Kenya, notable changes in national policy have been credited to the lobbying efforts of NCFA. A major milestone was the repeal of the Tea Act 2020 and the Tea Regulations 2021, where NCFA played a pivotal role in championing these reforms.

In 2020, NCFA presented a memorandum to the Senate, which was escalated to the Head of State. Following a series of engagements, a National Tea Task Force was established. It was through this Task Force that several reforms were introduced into the tea sub-sector, including:

• Reduction of KTDA Management fees from 2% to 1.5%.
• Elimination of the voting-by-proxy system during elections, enforcing a one-man-one-vote system.
• Reduction of tea brokerage fees from 1.5% to 1%.
• Subsidizing fertilizer costs by the government to alleviate production costs for farmers, extended to other crops as well.
• Other reforms that were proposed are still being followed up.
